CONCEPT NOTE

The strategic construction of Asia Pacific has gained prominence in the late twentieth century as an emerging region of analysis in the changing International order, especially in the post-cold war period. There is no consensus on the boundaries of the Asia Pacific, which has largely become a matter of intellectual contestations depending on the imagination of the scholars and the real time situations. For some the nucleus has always been Northeast and Southeast Asia (China, Korea, Japan and ASEAN countries), Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the smaller Pacific Island States. For others, the region has also included the eastern Pacific Rim, the Pacific countries of North and South America, in addition to the whole of the former Soviet Union, and South Asia. Though the geographical explanation of the region remains fluid, yet it is an important geo-strategic sphere in international political order. Ever since the beginning of 21st century one could witness the shift in the structural power and leadership, paving way for other nation-states to emerge as significant poles in a global multipolar world order. One could also witness new dimensions of politico-economic, socio-cultural, security/insecurity issues such as South China Sea dispute, International terrorism, Human Rights Issues, Ethnic Conflicts, Migration, widening economic disparities, environmental degradation etc. emerging, having transnational character, and thus facilitating the instrument of multilateralism and regional cooperation to hold sway. Asia Pacific region has become a theatre of competition and conflict to witness interplay between global powers and emerging economies like US, China, India, Russia, Australia, Japan in a multipolar world. In a Covid world order, it has become essential to examine emerging trends in Asia Pacific region, which has gained traction because of many factors including relative decline of U.S., rise of China as an assertive power, and reckoning India as a regional and a rising global power. In fact all major powers of the world are trying to redefine their roles and status in the Asia Pacific political arena. As, various challenges to the security and strategic complex of Asia-Pacific are evident at local, regional, and global level, most of the challenges cannot be dealt singlehandedly.
