Event Report

On 23--25 March 2023, the Nepal Institute for International Cooperation and Engagement (NIICE) hosted the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration ’s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) and several current and former Nepalese senior government officials for a workshop to discuss Nepal’s current state of border security and identify opportunities for future collaboration.

The agenda covered a range of topics including border management, risk analysis, and information sharing. The event also featured scenario-based policy discussions and case studies of successful border security initiatives from around the world. Participants recognized the need for incorporating detection and interdiction equipment into Nepal’s security architecture and further establishing a counter smuggling capability. Subsequent workshops will continue discussions on how to enhance Nepal’s border security and expand cooperation on security matters.

The mission of NSDD is to build global capability to detect, disrupt, and investigate the smuggling of nuclear and radioactive material before it can be used in an act of terrorism. The office partners with over 100 agencies in more than 80 countries around the world.
