DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nDr. David Arase teaches postgraduate courses in International Politics at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center located at Nanjing University, China, for the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. His current research focuses on China’s rise, growing Sino-US strategic rivalry, and the effect on Indo-Pacific regional order. He has previously taught at Pomona College in Claremont, CA; School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and University of Tsukuba; and has recently given talks and conducted research at the Yusof Ishak Institute of Southeast Asian Studies; Institute of Chinese Studies—Delhi; Observer Research Foundation; Rajaratnam School of International Studies; Japan Institute of International Affairs; National Institute for Defense Studies (Japan); the China Center for Collaborative Studies of the South China Sea (China); Institute of International Studies (Taipei); and CSIS (Washington DC). His three most recent book publications are the Routledge Handbook on Africa-Asia Relations (Routledge, 2017); China's Rise and East Asian Order (Palgrave, 2016); and The US-Japan alliance: balancing soft and hard power in East Asia (Nissan Institute/Routledge, 2010), which was awarded the Ohira Memorial Foundation Special Prize in 2011.
